Reimagining What a Classroom Can Be
A school bus transformed into a space for creativity, discovery, and hands-on learning.
What if learning could happen beyond the walls of a traditional classroom?
That question is at the heart of the Ignite Mobile Classroom, an innovative project developed in partnership with Durango Education Foundation and Durango School District and brought to life by the Wanderful Wheels team in Durango, Colorado.
Our challenge was to transform a school bus into a fully functional, off-grid learning environment that could travel throughout the community, bringing hands-on STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineer, Art and Math) educational experiences directly to students.
Every inch of the bus was thoughtfully designed to balance flexibility, functionality, and creativity. The finished space features 22 individual workstations, adaptable learning areas, integrated storage, and room for additional outdoor activities.
Behind the scenes, a robust solar and lithium battery system powers the classroom, while energy-efficient heating and cooling help create a comfortable environment for learning in different seasons.
For our team, this project was about much more than converting a bus. It was an opportunity to apply our experience building off-grid camper vans to something with a lasting impact on our community.
The result is a classroom that can go wherever curiosity takes it.
